Sunshine Coast Council has facilitating the installation of a new dedicated global data link to Australia. The project includes the installation of a 550km undersea fibre optic cable that connects the Sunshine Coast to the 9700km Japan-Guam-Australia (JGA) submarine cable.
The cable, which is laid on or buried under the sea floor, connects to a cable landing station adjacent to the new Maroochydore City Centre. The cable increases the Sunshine Coast’s telecommunications capacity and provides a direct backbone connection to the Internet.
The Sunshine Coast (Maroochydore) Cable Landing Station is located at 44 Maud Street, Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast, adjacent to the Maroochydore City Centre.
The Cable Landing System, is able to bypass Sydney and connect direct internationally. This will provide local businesses with a range of new opportunities that come with increased speed and diversity.
Currently the roll-out of local fibre infrastructure from the Cable station to business and end users in the Sunshine Coast is being down by a few local enterprises. They include OneQode and Legion Telecom.
This full fibre network is separate from the National Broadband Network and will provide the Sunshine Coast with a dedicated high speed data network connected to the world but controlled locally.
